Question about booking hotel with debit card?

I've read hotels ';freeze'; debit cards when you use them as payment. Do they just freeze those funds or do they freeze the entire card? Example: I book a room for $50 they withhold say $200 for possible damage or whatever the reason they withhold funds is. But if i have $1,000 in my account can I still use the other $800 or is the entire card frozen?Question about booking hotel with debit card?
i think you made your reservation with a booking company because the hotels charge credit/debit card when you check out, the money is hold because you made it through a booking company, they charge in advanced ';to guaranty the rate'; the transaction for charging may take up to 72 hours, then it will show as charged, it's the same when you pay at the hotel but they only hold the room rate and sometimes a deposit, the deposit is released after you check out it's just to cover incidental charges, (just in case something happens), but don't worry you can use your debit card as long as you have money on itQuestion about booking hotel with debit card?
Every hotel has a different policy. Some may not even freeze your card. It all just depends on the hotel.

The best thing to do is to call the hotel before you make the reservation. Major hotel chains have a 1-800 number you can call, so it usually won't cost you anything to ask questions. Speak with the front desk or someone in accounting.
well, in canada, debit cards are not linked to credit cards...so if you were to say register at a hotel, they would charge the card upfront for the amount of the hotel stay, PLUS, the 100 or 200 security deposit. NO more than that.

Even in the USA, where there is often a credit card backing the debit card, they would only

';preauth'; a certain amount....Not the entire limit on the card.

You should ask the hotel directly how much they will preauth the card for when you are booking.
When I've done this with my debit card, they have always accessed $300 over and above what the room rate is.

You should be able to use whatever is available in the account apart from the $300 or whatever the amount is, unless your card has a stipulated amount that is your ';spending cap'; for the day or if there are other rules attached to your account.

Your best bet is to call your bank and find out what their policy is, because it would sure suck to get caught short.

:D Best of luck !
Not only does it depend on the hotel. It also depends on your bank.

For example, Bank of America generally drops most hotel holds the next morning. ING doesn't drop the hold for 3 business days. And many people have told me that their bank keeps the hold for up to a week.

The hold will be no more than what the hotel has asked to hold. So if you have $1,000 in your acount and the bank asks to hold $200, the remaining $800 will be available to use.
It's not a freeze on the card. It's simply a 'hold' of a certain amount. The hold is usually for about 7 days. You can use the remaining balance in the meantime.
