Can I purchase marijuana at a Smart Shop in Amsterdam, then take it back to my hotel room to use it?

I'm going with two of my friends, and we'd feel safer doing it in our hotel room than at one of the coffee shops. Can I purchase marijuana at a Smart Shop in Amsterdam, then take it back to my hotel room to use it?
No and maybe!

Smart shops don't sell marijuana. They sell psychoactive substances e.g. they used to sell magic mushrooms until 01/Dec 2008 (when they were banned).

What you mean is called a coffeeshop which is where you buy marijuana and can smoke it there as well.

To be honest, coffeeshops are pretty safe with regards smoking there. The non-tourist trap ones are very relaxed affairs, read the newspaper, play chess, cards, or just have a (soft) drink, smoke and a chat.

You can buy it and not smoke it in a coffeeshop should you wish, but as regards smoking in a hotel room, well it depends on the hotel. The vast majority won't permit it in their rooms, and you can be pulled up for the mere scent when a housekeeper is cleaning. Therefore if you really want to do this, then make sure in advance that the hotel you book is smoker friendly. You can get some advice on applicable ones on this forum http://lem.localinet.co.uk/phpBB2/

Otherwise you can go somewhere, e.g. a quiet corner of a park or something, away from the maddening crowd to sit and smoke and then you don't be bothered. It is not an atmosphere where it is unsafe and secretive. In that respect, a coffeeshop is probably the nicest place to have a smoke. Can I purchase marijuana at a Smart Shop in Amsterdam, then take it back to my hotel room to use it?
Yes you can purchase and carry it out. Most hotels have a policy against smoking it (or anything else) in the room- but they specifically say no marihuana. And many will kick you out for it.

If you've never been to amsterdam before, the concept of smoking in public may seem weird, but trust me that will change as soon as you're there. And as far as safety, I don't see any reason for concern whatsoever.
You are no longer allowed to smoke in a hotel room.
