What's the difference between a motel and a hotel?

Besides one starting with an m and the other starting with an h?What's the difference between a motel and a hotel?
A hotel is a commercial establishment offering lodging to travelers and sometimes to permanent residents, and often having restaurants, meeting rooms, stores, etc., that are available to the general public. A motel is a hotel providing travelers with lodging and free parking facilities, typically a roadside hotel having rooms adjacent to an outside parking area or an urban hotel offering parking within the building. motels are more out of city and hotel is in the city !
motels I think have certain amount of rooms while a hotel has a ton of rooms in it
most motels are crap.
